"I've been tasked by Lt. Jillian Toft on the UC Vigilance to find and bring back any evidence pertaining to Crimson Fleet related illegal activities. Audio logs and text logs would be especially helpful in bringing them to justice."
Burden of Proof is a faction mission in Starfield. It started alongside the quest Deep Cover on the UC Vigilance. Lt Toft asks the Spacefarer to find any evidence of illegal activities that specific members of the Crimson Fleet are involved in. As more evidence is brought in, Toft will reveal more of their personal history.

Detailed Walkthrough[]
While working undercover with the Crimson Fleet, pieces of evidence can be found that link the pirates or fellow abettors to crimes taking place over the Settled Systems. Pieces of evidence will be marked with an (Evidence) tag. All listed evidence here does not count as stolen property and can be taken while detected without any recourse.
There are over 20 pieces of evidence to be found, but only 15 are required to “complete” the quest.
Main Quest Evidence[]
Deep Cover[]
- The Naeva Meetup (Evidence) slate can be found in the Broken Spear bar on Cydonia, located on a table behind Adler Kemp.
Echoes of the Past[]
- The Carter's Gig (Evidence) slate can be found in a locked locker in the showers room of Cell Block D of The Lock.
- The Warden's Log (Evidence) slate can be found in the Warden's Office of the Lock, on an electrical box to the right of the window.
- Two pieces can be found on board the Trident Starliner Siren of the Stars. Note: These are not obtainable after the quest Breaking the Bank.
- One is in the Captain's Quarters (in the Crew Quarters section).
- The other is obtained by following the quest and learning of Larry Dumbrosky's scheme to defraud GalBank, after disabling the life support on the ship.
- A piece can be found in Kay's House restaurant in The Well on New Atlantis, where you meet Huan Daiyu for the first time. Head down the stairs from the meet point until you see the sign for Kay's House. Go straight ahead into the kitchen and find the evidence Huan's Talk on the counter to your right.
- A piece can be found on the SY-920 star station. After getting through the checkpoints and reaching Gabriel Vogel's lab, there will be a room behind his where it can be found on a cart next to a console. Note This is not obtainable after the quest The Best There Is.
- A piece can be found in the back room of Madame Sauvage's Place on Neon, where you will meet Estelle Vincent for the second time during Absolute Power. To the left of the bar is a door to the back room. On the stand between the bed and the sofa is the next piece of evidence, The Big Score.
- A piece of evidence can be found in Euphorika behind the bar in the member's lounge. You will go here to speak with Ayumi Komiko during Absolute Power.
- A piece of evidence can be found in Ayumi Komiko's safe in Neon after a persuasion check on the receptionist at the Generydyne headquarters (Trade Tower). This can also be used to bribe Ayumi Komiko in the quest of Absolute Power.
- During the Eye of the Storm quest, the player will find several audio logs from Jasper Kryx. The last of these GBLR013 Mortem Obire is a piece of evidence.

- Another piece can be found at the Clinic behind Gennady Ayton who you will meet if you do the Crimson Fleet fetch quest Doctor's Orders for Samina Mizrah.
- A piece of evidence can be found during the Reclaiming the Past mission for Bog, bartender on the Key.

Located in the "Bunks" area of the space station. It's in the small room with a single sleep cot and a barbell, on the lower floor, not too far from the stairwell.

Found in the repair bay of Jasmine Durand, on the desk with a computer and an intercom, located in a slate rack.
Voss's Parts (Evidence)[]
Found in a slate holder in the Captain's Quarters of the Command Center. It is found next to Delgado's Computer.
Gagarin Landing[]
A piece of evidence can be found at the local bar in Gagarin Landing on Gagarin, sitting on the bar's corner.
Hopetown[]
A piece of evidence can be found on the bar in HopeTown,
The Red Mile[]
A piece of evidence can be found on the bar at the Red Mile.
The Den[]
A piece of evidence can be found on a table in front of the Trade Authority desk at the Den.
Gathering Enough Evidence[]
As you gather evidence and hand it in to her, Jillian Toft can be pressed to open up about her own history and why she is working with UC SysDef to destroy the Crimson Fleet. Once you have gathered at least 15 pieces of evidence, she will reward the player with the unique pistol Memento Mori and the quest will be “complete”.
Regardless of whether to speak with Toft about her past, gathering at least 15 pieces of evidence will also ensure that SysDef is able to gain the most ships possible for the final battle. It will also prevent a number of Crimson Fleet captains from participating.
It is possible to hand in additional pieces of evidence after the quest is completed.
