The ECS Constant, short for Earth Colony Ship Constant, is a generational colony ship. The vessel departed from Earth in 2140, before the advent of the Grav Drive, to colonize Porrima II, but upon arriving at its destination in 2330, the colonists found the planet was already occupied by a luxury resort. The Constant was named after a 17th century English colony ship, with the first name omitted (Susan or Sarah) due to the uncertain nature of its name in history.[1]

Background[]

In the early 2100s, Rupert Brackenridge deduced that the Earth would soon face an extinction-level event and would become uninhabitable within the next 50 years. To prepare for this, he gathered and founded the group to build the Constant and prepare them for the trip to settle the most habitable planet they could find.[2] The group was made up of wealthy elites, intellectuals, artists, scientists, and others.

On September 27, 2140, the Constant took off from Earth, almost a decade ahead of the first wave of exodus of humanity from Earth and its eventual destruction. However, despite being said to be the most advanced ship at the time, because their journey predated the advent of the Grav Drive, their journey was expected to take around 200 years to reach its destination. They prepared for this scenario, fully intending for the ship and their mission to be upheld by their descendants.

In order to maintain order and for the ship to continue running effectively, each individual born in the ship will eventually have roles assigned to them.[1] Other positions, such as the Captaincy, are handed down to their children, with command of the ship staying with the Brackenridge family throughout.

With some maneuvering by the ship's latest navigation officer, they managed to shave off at least a decade off their trip, taking the Constant a total of 190 years to reach its destination. By then, however, the planet they intended to colonize was already inhabited and had become the independent resort known as Paradiso. Unable to communicate properly with any passing ships and the others on land due to their obsolete communications technology, the Constant stayed in the planet's orbit, uncertain about how to proceed safely. It would take the Spacefarer's interference for the residents to find out that they were not the only humans to have left Earth and survived.
