Detailed Walkthrough[]
Upon traveling to Freja III, a nearby satellite will contact the player's ship with a distress call. Upon landing, nothing unusual will be seen about the lab. Interacting with the intercom, Chief of Security Ethan Hughes asks what your business is here. When you let him know about the distress signal, he will state that no distress signal was sent. Once you mention an explosion in the High Energy Research Lab, he will let the Spacefarer in to speak to the director, but asks that companions remain outside.
Upon entering, you are scanned by a security system. Walk through and allow yourself to be scanned. Ethan will then declare a code yellow, lock down all sections, inform the staff of a specific protocol, then allow you inside. Speak to him. He will introduce himself as Chief of Security. He instructs you to follow him; he explains he will lead you to the director (Kaia Patel). Follow Ethan through the facility. He will explain that Nishina was built 4 or 5 years ago and focus strictly on experimental research. You may only get through a short portion of this conversation before shifting between realities, but the conversation isn't consequential.
Reality will shift, and the Spacefarer will be attacked in an alternate reality of the storage area by two Cataxi. Once you kill the two Cataxi, you will transport back to the original universe and Hughes will be startled. After a short conversation, he will continue to escort the Spacefarer towards Director Kaia Patel.
- If you have the Starborn trait, there are multiple unique Starborn dialogue options when speaking to Ethan after the first jump to the alternate universe - you can explain that you know all about the experiment already (from going through the mission in a different universe)
You will head to the next room, the Work Room. Reality will shift again. In the work room in the other universe you will find Rafael Aguerro, who is the only survivor of the accident in the alternate universe. He was the chief engineer at the research station before the accident. Speak with him.
- If you are Starborn, you will have a unique dialogue with Rafael where you can explain what is happening and why. If you select it, it will skip the conversation with Rafael where you learn some details about the accident and the experiments, and instead immediately transport you back to the original universe.
- If you have a level in the Medicine perk, you will have another unique dialogue option with Rafael - judging by his shape he is dehydrated and starving.
In the middle of the conversation you will shift back to the original reality. Hughes is briefing the director on what is happening and realizes you have returned. He will explain that if anything else happens, the Director's office is on the second floor at the end of the hall, and "you can't miss it". Continue following Hughes onward towards the director into the Hall section.
Halfway through the hall, reality will shift again. You will be able to find Dr. Barakova's Journal during this shift, and will need to fight 4 Cataxi. Once you reach the top of the stairs, you will shift back to the original universe near Suite 2 & Suite 3. Continue following Hughes to the director's office. Hughes will introduce you to the director and stand guard outside.
Hughes and the Spacefarer will meet with Director Patel and tell her what was observed (Dr. Maria Hughes - their chief scientist - will also be present, and extremely skeptical). You explain a little bit about the Artifact. They will speculate why this reality jump is only impacting you and discuss the accident. They have no idea how the gas leak was stopped - the only plausible explanation was that Rafael managed to adjust the ventilation controls. Patel will explain the reasoning for the station being built - it was built to experiment the gravitational distortion caused by the Artifact. 3 months ago Rafael was calibrating an experimental probe when "something went wrong". Although they don't know what happened, there was a series of explosions, and yet somehow the station is still running.
Explain to them that Rafael explained the probe is feeding power into the distortion, causing the reality shifts/the strength of the gravitational field to increase. You need to get down to the research level and use the kill switch to shut the probe down - it is not responding to the kill switch from above (the explosion fried the circuits used to communicate).
- There is a Starborn dialogue option with Dr. Hughes where you can explain exactly what is happening. This then triggers an entire Starborn conversation where you explain everything that happened. It also skips the discussion around how you will access the research lab & the backstory on the accident/experiment.
After the conversation, Dr. Hughes will ask the Spacefarer to follow her. Before leaving, you can talk to Director Patel for a little more information and take Director's Incident Report from the data slate & keycard display on the desk. Follow Dr. Hughes to the control room.
Reality will shift again as you walk towards the fabrication lab. You can explore Suite 2, Suite 3 and the Director's Office in the alternate universe. You will find Rafael in the work room fighting Cataxi. The ceiling caved in from Suite 3 above. He will will slightly out of sorts, but agree to do things your way and give you the Nishina pantry keycard.
- There is a Starborn dialogue option to explain that you need to shut down the probe. He will give you the pantry key immediately and you skip any conversation.
Travel with Rafael through the pantry with intent to reach the research level. Once you reach the dining room you will be transported back to the original universe. As you travel through the dining room towards the door out, you will transfer back to the alternate universe. You can talk to Rafael for additional dialogue on the accident, the Cataxi, and the probe. Proceed until you reach the Foyer and Security section in the alternative universe and take out the 3 Cataxi. At this point, you can speak to Rafael again. He will ask you to "do whatever you're going to do" while he tries to clear a path to the door.
You will jump to the original universe in the security office. Speak to Ethan. After Ethan unlocks the doors so you can head towards the Fabrication Lab, he will ask if there is anything else you need. Ethan can then be persuaded to provide a powerful gun against the scorpions: Experiment A-7. He can also warn you that if any security cameras catch non-Nishina staff, the security system will set off an alarm and "all hell will break loose". If you try to go anywhere else than towards Maria, it will transport you back to the Foyer in the alternate universe. Head towards Maria and you will be transported to the Main Hall. Head through the main hall, intro the atrium and up the stairs. Halfway up the stairs, you will be transported back to the original universe.
Continue up the stairs to reach Maria's lab again and upon reaching it speak to Maria. She will test a probe frequency and a distortion will appear. She'll ask the Spacefarer to step in and will change the frequency, again shifting them to the other side. On the other side a copy of the probe can be found which allows one to shift back by activating the distortion.
- This conversation/interaction with Maria has a Starborn option which you tell her the exact calibration setting rather than her testing up and down the range, which immediately opens the first distortion. You can then instruct her the correct calibration setting to go through the distortion as well.
Upon returning to the initial reality, Maria will ask you if you are alright.
- You have an additional Starborn dialogue option here to tell her you knew this would work.
Maria will inform you that if you can get to the high research lab - disengage the power interlocks then pull the emergency shutdown to stop the probe. Maria will then ask you to speak with Director Patel. You can speak to Maria for some additional information on distortions.
Speak to Director Patel. She will mention that she asked the doctor to give you supplies. She will ask you which reality you will choose, if that decision comes.
- If you have the Starborn trait there is a dialogue option for that. If you have the research methods perk, there is also a dialogue option for that involving Schrödinger's box.
You can also ask a few more questions for additional information. Regardless of your choice of who you will save, she will inform you that the research level will be on lockdown, and to expect resistance. She then asks Ethan to unlock the elevator lobby so that you can access the locked down research level, then bids you good luck. At this point you can jump in between realities and explore everything and then proceed further in the mission. You will not have any additional forced reality shifts. Optionally head to Dr. Barakova and she will give you a few levelled medpacks/healing items. You can give her her journal from the other reality for some unique dialogue. She will give you a few more supplies and a discount on anything else you purchase from her.
Shift back and forth between realities until you reach the elevator and go to the research level. At the research level, shift back and forth between realities to find a way through, whilst lifting the lockdowns, until the heart of the experiment is reached. Regardless of the reality decided, the probe in will be selected and depending on the reality, a conversion with either Rafael or Director Patel will be required to complete the quest.
To save all survivors in both realities, clear both versions of the laboratory and find the probe calibration protocol slate on Rafael's corpse in the original universe. Follow the instructions and run the degaussing process on the lab control computer in each reality. Turn off and on the indicated switches; for a locked laboratory not affected by the explosion, reality transitions will need to be used several times. If the process is successful, there will be a message in the degaussing section about this. After completing the process in two realities, frequency calibration can begin. In the blocked laboratory, set the frequency to 40 GHz, in the ruined laboratory, set the frequency to 24 GHz. Activate primary calibration control near the experimental installation, and the connection between realities will be made.
You will wake up in the research station if you saved both realities. Rafael will be with you. He will travel back to New Atlantis. Director Patel will thank you and grant you the highest reward possible from the Consortium. The mission will end and you will receive your rewards.
