Gideon Aker is a crewmate who can be hired at The Viewport in New Atlantis.[1]
Background[]
Gideon Aker is a ship weapons specialist living in the United Colonies on Jemison. As a resident of New Atlantis, Gideon is currently living with his wife, Kalinda, and three children in The Well, an infamous slum for the lower classes, transient workforce, and criminal element sitting beneath the grand architecture and prosperous city above.[2]
Prior to living in The Well, Gideon was the Captain of his own transport vessel and worked as an independent contractor for long hauls. In the hopes of netting higher-paying work, Gideon signed on with the Trade Authority for high-risk, high-reward hauling (i.e. smuggling). For a time, this was highly lucrative and helped Gideon and his wife start a family on New Atlantis in spite of its expense. However, during one of his hauls, a group of Spacers ambushed his ship, disabled his engines, boarded, and raided his cargo.[2]
Stranded, Gideon issued a general distress call that was picked up by some patrolling Vanguards, who helped him repair his ship and escorted him back to Jemison.[3] Feeling lucky to have escaped with his life, Gideon returned to the Trade Authority only to discover that they held him personally responsible for the financial loss of the cargo. While Gideon never knew what he was transporting, it was valuable enough that the Trade Authority seized his ship as collateral against the debt, despite the fact that the ship was the main source of his income.
Since then, Gideon has been scrambling to repay the Trade Authority by working for various ship crews by offering his services in the lobby of The Viewport. If hired by the Spacefarer, Gideon will express gratitude and a general hope that his "bad luck" does not rub off during their travels together.[2]

Gideon can be found at The Viewport bar in New Atlantis. Gideon's initial hiring price is 16,500 credits. A successful persuasion check can lower this by half (to 8,250 credits).
