Ground Combat entails all fighting done while on foot (or while using a boost-pack). This includes combat done inside of spaceships (such as boarding actions). For ship to ship combat (such as dogfighting), see Space Combat.
Basics[]
Starfield's Ground Combat system is a fairly approachable and familiar system to those who've played first-person and third-person shooters. Guns can be fired either from the hip or aiming down the sights. Starfield allows the player to alternate between first person and third person.
Starfield allows players to use a boost-pack (similar in nature to a jetpack in other media) to traverse the battlefield.
Players can use stealth to engage with an advantage, or directly engage.
Weapon Characteristics[]
Weapons are sorted into groups based on what they are (i.e. ballistics vs lasers vs physical). The player may upgrade the performance of all weapons in a group by increasing the corresponding skills of that group.
Weapons can be modded to increase their performance or give them other characteristics.[1]

Ground Combat Environments[]
Ground Combat takes place in 3 major environments:
- Open world exploration
- Inside facilities or caves
- Inside spaceships or space facilities
Open world exploration consists of 'bump' confrontations with either hostile wildlife or hostile NPC's.
Facility combat is confrontations in enclosed regions on a planet's surface.
Inside of spaceship is combat that may or may not involve zero g combat.
Skills & Traits[]
Many skills in Starfield are centered around Ground Combat in one form or another. They can increase the player's damage output, accuracy, survivability, or give options to disable or manipulate enemies.
Some traits have no effect on combat, but others impact it substantially. For instance, the Wanted trait increased damage when low on health.[1]
Powers[]
Starfield has what will be tentatively called 'powers.' These are abilities derived from interactions with the alien artifacts.[1]
Looting[]
As in other Bethesda games, the player will be able to loot combat environments. This includes the bodies of the fallen and containers. Items gathered can then be used, sold, or dropped as the player wishes.
