Starfield Wiki

Jivanta Bedi is an Ensign of the maintenance crew of UC System Defense in Starfield. She can be found aboard the UC Vigilance.

Background[]

Before joining UC SysDef, Jivanta Bedi used to work at DRONE, a robot company which she left due to the work not fulfilling her. She joined UC SysDef because she believes its cause is just. Bedi maintains the belief that robots are equals to humans, with her pointing out that at her old company people would frequently bring in battered robots for repairs.

Show: First Encounter

"Oh hello, I don't think we've met! Are you by chance new here?"

You seem unsure. I'd be willing to bet you're new here too.
"I am! But I've never seen you here before! Wait, are you that dangerous Terrormorph slayer everyone's been talking about?"
"I am! But I've never seen you here before! Wait, are you that dangerous ex-convict everyone's been talking about?"
No, I've been here for some time.
"Is that so? Wait a minute... aren't you that dangerous Terrormorph slayer everyone's been talking about?"
"Is that so? Wait a minute... aren't you that dangerous ex-convict everyone's been talking about?"
Yeah, Commander Ikande just recruited me to join SysDef.
"Are baap re! You're that dangerous Terrormorph slayer everyone's been talking about!"
"Are baap re! You're that dangerous ex-convict everyone's been talking about!"
My name is (Name). Nice to meet you.
"Wait, I know that name! You're that dangerous Terrormorph slayer everyone is talking about!"
"Wait, I know that name! You're that dangerous ex-convict everyone is talking about!"
"Well, don't worry, I'm not scared of you. My godmother was a member of the Strikers gang, and you're not even half as scary as her. My name is Jivanta. I'm an Ensign with the maintenance and robotics team. And just between you and me, I don't think you're dangerous, haha. Do you?"
I am dangerous. I've killed people. Sometimes for sport, most times for fun. "So the rumors are true? But you can't be THAT bad if Commander Ikande chose you for this mission. I think he sees a big heart, yearning for goodness inside you. And so do I."
I'm a teddy bear. A big softy. "That's what I thought. I like to think I am a pretty good judge of character. The fact that you came to me, a stranger, eager to talk, tells me all I need to know."
I can handle myself in a fight, if that's what you mean. "That doesn't mean you're dangerous. Look at the Model A's on this ship, for example. They can handle themselves too."
I don't know what the rumors are, but I'm just me. "Aren't we all! I know people look at me funny when I say I'm from Neon, like it's some alien planet where only debauchery is allowed. First of all, every planet is alien. Second of all, it's perfectly okay to be normal on Neon. No one is going to arrest you for staying home and watching TV."
[Strikers] Actually, I'm a member of the Strikers myself. "Are you really? What a coincidence! Do you miss home at all? I need to go back the next time I get shore leave."
[Neon Street Rat] Strikers, huh? I'm from Neon myself. "Are you really? What a coincidence! Do you miss home at all? I need to go back the next time I get shore leave."
"Anyway, it was very nice to meet you! If you want to talk some more, I will be here!"
Why did you join SysDef? "That's a good question! It was what you'd call, a minor moral crisis. I wasn't happy with my old job, at DRONE. I felt like my life was on an assembly line. Everything was about profit, and nothing had any real meaning. But then it occurred to me, if I'm so miserable, I could just leave! So one day, I just did. SysDef is far from perfect. But our goal is noble. I can sleep soundly knowing my work will be for a cause that is just."
What are your duties here on the ship? "I'm part of the maintenance team that makes sure the Vigilance is operating smoothly. On the robotics side, I take care of the Model A's on the ship, and make sure they're treated with respect and dignity. They are people, after all, just like us."
Agreed. We should treat robots the same way we treat all living things. "See, I knew there was something I liked about you! Machines are very dear to me."
Robots are sentient, but they aren't people, and don't get the same right. "And what system do you use to determine who is a person? I would think my definition is different than yours."
To me, robots are just tools. "That is very disappointing to hear. Can you really say a Model A, one that speaks with such feeling, is the same as say, a hammer?"
"Think of it this way. How can we expect a robot to fight by our side, if we won't fight for their right to exist? So I always do my best to treat them as my equals."
Have you seen robots abused and mistreated? "Not here. But at DRONE, clients would come in and bring their robots for maintenance. And the condition these robots were in was appalling, not to mention the way they were talked down to! Personally, I think the way you treat your robots, says a lot about you."
Is there anything you want to know about me? "Oh I have so many questions, there is not enough time to ask them all! But I won't ask about your Vanguard duties, as I'm sure you're tired of people asking. Instead, I will ask you a very simple question. Are you a morning, afternoon, or night person?"
Morning. "Me too! I love waking up bright and early!"
Afternoon. "I do like afternoon naps. But only after I wake up bright and early!"
Night. "Then we can't be friends, haha. No, I'm kidding, of course. But I prefer the early hours myself."
I don't like labels. I feel like they're too constricting. "Yes, but it's not like it's your whole personality. Just the time you wake up! And I love waking up early."
You seem like the type. "Do I? I guess that's a compliment. Everything is just better in the morning. The food, the air, the coffee!"
That's probably not unusual for a military vessel. "Yes, but I like getting up before even the personnel. When I have the coffee maker all to myself."
"But the thing I like best is the quiet. When I can look out into space, and see the whole galaxy is asleep. When it's that quiet, the only noise you hear is from the Vigilance itself. In fact, we keep each other company, when the world is busy snoring in their beds. It makes it so the mornings are just for us."

"See you soon!"

"If you hear your ship grumble, don't panic, it's perfectly normal. Now if you hear it sneeze..."

You may have heard, I've joined the Crimson Fleet.
"Oh yes! And we have a new prisoner in the brig! It's really sad the Fleet couldn't just leave him be."
"I heard you had to hunt down a former pirate. I really wish the Fleet would just leave their old members alone."
"And having left a toxic situation to come here, I can relate to wanting to escape. Although no one's tried to have me killed."
Show: Post-Breaking the Bank

"Tell me, is it true that you were on the Siren of the Stars? I've never been on a luxury cruise liner. Is it as wonderful as they say?"

It was everything they say and more. "Oh, I am so jealous! Dancing, wining and dining! It's almost like you were a secret agent!"
Honestly, it's not really my style. "Then you really could've used me there. It's not my style either, but unlike you, I love to pretend."
I was there for the job. Nothing more. "Still, you had to get in character, right? Sit at the bar, order a fancy martini, that sort of thing."
"Did I tell you I once took ballroom dancing lessons? I watched a lot of spy shows as a kid, and I learned it just in case I ever found myself in a situation like yours. Now I'm mad I missed my one opportunity to put those talents to use! Really, I could've shown you a few moves."
Maybe I'll take you on a cruise someday. "That would be delightful! Can we bring my friend AI-ko? She's one of our flashier Model As."
There's always other missions down the road. "I bet when you took this job you didn't think you'd be doing this kind of work! The Crimson Fleet must be classier than I thought."
Funny, you always struck me as someone who couldn't dance. "Really? I guess because I work with machines, but robots have plenty of rhythm, you just need to loosen their joints a little."
"But yes, next time you find yourself on a luxury liner, let me know! I will be happy to assist."
Show: Absolute Power

"If you hear your ship grumble, don't panic, it's perfectly normal. Now if you hear it sneeze..."

What can you tell me about the Conduction Grid? "You want to know about the Conduction Grid? Really? But it's so old. From before old, honestly."
How can something be "before old?" "Well, you know how a watch can be very old, but a sundial is even older than that? It's from before old. The Conduction Grid is kind of like the sundial. It's ancient."
I need to know about the tech for a mission. The Fleet think it'll help us penetrate Bannoc IV's EM storms. "Ah, that is very interesting. In robotics, we also try to avoid voltage surges, due to the damage it can cause to the circuits."
It's very old tech, but it still works. "That is true. And I shouldn't talk ill of my elders."
It's not that old. Toft said just about eighty years. "EIGHTY years? I thought it was more like forty! Wow, that's even more ancient! You've got to remember, it's technology. One tech year is like ten dog years. At least!"
"Anyway, if I recall correctly, the grid converts energy from lightning strikes into power for the city. Literal lightning in a bottle! It's a very unique solution to a standard problem."

"If you hear your ship grumble, don't panic, it's perfectly normal. Now if you hear it sneeze..."

How's the Vigilance faring? Is it ready for the fight? "She's prepped and ready for battle. The advanced shielding from our friends at SY-920 should hold up against normal attacks. But we need those batteries down. Electromagnetic firepower on that scale is one of the few things that can penetrate it."
Show: Post-Legacy's End

"The Vigilance has its idiosyncrasies, just like any person. It's important to pay attention to what it has to say."

How do you feel now that the battle is over? "I feel good! It's nice to be a part of something that means real change. Granted, my part was very small. Like on of those trees in the background of the school play."
Every role in this battle was important. Yours included. "You are very kind to say that! Am I blushing? I feel like I'm blushing."
True, I did the majority of the work. "You did! And you deserve all the pageantry that comes with this vicory!"
A tree is overstating it. You were probably more like the dirt surrounding it. "Oh, but that is a very high compliment! The soil is the earth, and without it, no living thing can grow."
"But yes. with the Fleet gone, the galaxy is a safer place. That is something we all can be proud of."

"See you soon!"
