Starfield Wiki

Job Gone Wrong is the first story mission for the Freestar Rangers in Starfield.

Overview[]

The player receives this quest when they first enter Akila City. The Shaw Gang was attempting to rob GalBank but were discovered and took hostages. The player then resolves the issue one way or another.

Detailed Walkthrough[]

On attempting to enter Akila City for the first time, an Akila City security guard will stop you at the gate. They'll let you know that, by the order of Marshall Deputy Daniel Blake, they were ordered to inform you of some trouble at GalBank. The guard states that "folks might be in danger, so you may want to steer clear". Upon further conversation with the security guard, you will learn that there was an attempted bank robbery and things went sideways. You also learn the robbers are part of the Shaw Gang.

  • If you have the Starborn trait, you get a unique dialogue option with the Akila City security guard.
  • If you have Sam Coe as a follower, the security guard will have some unique dialogue with Sam about helping out (as he was a former Freestar Ranger).

Upon approaching the GalBank building, the robbers will be making threats and demands to Marshall Blake. They threaten him stating that if he moves towards the building, a hostage dies. After Marshall Blake asks what their demands are, they will tell him: they want a neutral negotiator. No Freestar Rangers, not Marshall Blake, and no city guards.

Talk to Marshall Daniel Blake. At first he will request you stay back. You will need to explain that you can help resolve the situation - telling the Marshall he is clearly backed into a corner and needs outside assistance. He will agree.

  • If you have Sam Coe following you, Marshall Blake will have unique dialogue with Sam about how he left the Freestar Rangers. After that conversation, Sam will vouch for you stating you (the Spacefarer) may be the solution Daniel is looking for in this situation - this allows you to progress further/skip one piece of dialogue where you need to justify to the Marshall that he needs your help.

The Marshall will explain the situation. People from the Shaw gang tried to rob the place but got spotted by a guard. In a rush, they took everyone inside hostage and are now keeping watch so the Rangers don't move against them. They are using the intercom to communicate with Marshall Blake and the Rangers. They won' talk to him, the Rangers, or Akila City security and want a neutral negotiator. Daniel also gives some background on the Shaw gang and explains that this particular group of gang members seems green and inexperienced. It seems they have no plan. He thinks this may work in the Ranger's favor. However, the Marshall currently has no plan to resolve it - as neither him nor security nor the Rangers can currently resolve the situation without lives being lost.

At this point, you can offer your assistance in resolving the situation as the neutral party. The Marshall states that's fine, but lets you know he won't give into the gang's demands, and tells you to be smart as there are lives at stake. He asks you to report back to him after you are done negotiating with the gang.

Head up and interact with the intercom to talk to the "Bank Robber Leader". Regardless of how the conversation goes, report back to Daniel.

Passed the persuasion check[]

If you successfully persuaded the gang leader to stand down, let the Marshall know the gang will come quietly. He will be impressed at how you resolved the situation and thanks you for your courage. He will then gift you your reward and let you know you might be Freestar Ranger material.

Failed/ignored the persuasion check[]

If you ignored the persuasion option/didn't pass the persuasion check, the Marshall will be disappointed but will agree/explain there is only one other option now: take out the gang members holding the hostages captive.

As for how to infiltrate the building, you have two options: Enter in the backdoor (using the key the Marshall gives you) or ask to see the hostages, then take all the gang members out before they can respond and kill any hostages.

[Further detail needed on this approach]

After resolving the hostage situation[]

Regardless of how you resolved the situation, Marshall Blake will mention you may be Freestar Ranger material. If you're interested, he tells you to head over to The Rock and ask for Emma Wilcox. She handles the new recruits.

Reward[]

  • Levelled credits
  • 150 XP

Notes/Trivia[]

  • You cannot progress with the main mission The Empty Nest until you complete this mission.
  • Some of the bargoers at The Hitching Post will have unique dialogue during this mission.
    • The bar will be closed until the robbery is taken care of.
  • There will be a conversation between Davis Wilson and Bailey Kirklin that you can easily miss if you jump right into solving the bank robbery.
    • They discuss the power dynamic between Freestar Rangers vs. local law enforcement & other locals. It's clear from this conversation that the Rangers have a very good reputation in the city.
  • The first persuasion check doesn't seem to make any difference in the additional conversation. The only persuasion check that impacts the mission outcome is the second one. However, it seems if you pass the first persuasion check, the second one will be easier.
