Starfield Wiki

Late Bloomer is a Miscellaneous mission in Starfield.

Background[]

An activity quest triggers to speak to Kelton Frush.

On speaking with Kelton, he explains the newest developments related to the tree: the tertiary trunks on the tree have now also liquified their interiors, but they are not vibrating. He has an explanation for this: The trunks are “listening” for vibrations in response to the ones from their own tree.

Kelton admits this explanation is merely a theory (he has no hard evidence to prove this yet), but that it is completely supported by the data and his observations, as all good science is.

If the Spacefarer admits they don't know what all of this means, Kelton explains this means that the tree is ready to reproduce. The tree is sending vibrations out over massive distances and expecting to detect sympathetic vibrations in return.

As yet, there has been no response from surrounding trees (most surrounding trees were cut down during New Atlantis's expansion — making a response nearly impossible, according to Kelton). Kelton is nervous that the vibrations from the tree may continue to increase in strength and continue to receive no response.

Since nobody knows how strong the vibrations from the tree can become, Kelton is concerned that the tree's vibrations may become so strong that they could destroy parts of the city.

Kelton recalls that over 100 years ago at the end of the Narion War, a tree from New Atlantis (United Colonies) was offered to one of the leaders of Akila City (Freestar Collective) as a symbol of peace (a near-literal “olive branch”). Unfortunately, the tree was not native to Akila City, and predictably died just a few years later. Kelton scoffs at this decision, stating that clearly no exobotanists were consulted when the decision was made.

However, Kelton knows that at least one branch from the dead tree was kept in the Akila City museum, and asks the Spacefarer to go retrieve the branch from Ms. Casler (Leah Casler). Kelton believes he could combine the DNA samples from the tree branch with various data he has gathered to simulate a response and broadcast that response to the tree in New Atlantis. By offering to help retrieve the branch, the mission begins.

After receiving the mission, you can ask Kelton for additional explanation on how he will create the simulation of the tree's response - in which he gives a very deep answer to. You can also ask him if he believes it will be difficult to acquire the branch. He will give some background into what he has done so far to try to help, and offer possible alternatives if Leah won't give up the branch willingly (he implies at theft).

Objectives[]

  • Speak to Leah Casler
    • Convince Leah to hand over the branch
    • OR steal the branch from the museum
  • Deliver the branch to Kelton Frush
  • Wait for Kelton
  • Speak to Kelton Frush
  • Upload audio to an SSNN terminal
  • Run a diagnostic
  • Return to the tree
  • Speak to Kelton Frush

Detailed Walkthrough[]

After your conversation with Kelton, travel to Akila City to get the ancient branch from the Akila City Museum.

Speak to Leah Casler in Akila Museum. Once there, she'll prove utterly disinterested by your plea. You can try to pass a persuasion check to convince her, or just steal the branch. If you want to steal the branch, it is in the safe behind an expert lock. Once you have the Ancient branch, get back to Kelton. He will synthesize a sound based on the tree's DNA and his data, and task you with uploading a file (Kelton's audio file) into a SSNN terminal so that the nearby broadcast terminal sends the vibration stimulus to the lonely tree. In the SSNN Tower there will be a terminal where you can upload the file as a diagnostic file, then run it. Although Kelton mentions it may not be legal, you don't seem to acquire any bounty for tapping into the terminal and uploading the files, even when seen.

On your journey back to Kelton, you will hear the vibration audio emitting from SSNN broadcast terminals - specifically the one nearest to the tree. After reaching Kelton, speak to him. He will inform you that his theory was correct. The audio emitting from the broadcast terminal is already showing positive results — the tree is calming down. He provides some parting compliments and kind words and provides your reward, which ends the mission.

Rewards[]

Notes/Trivia[]

  • During this quest, the vibrations coming from the tree become audible. When standing near the tree, you can hear the vibrations.
  • Companions will comment on the legal implications of tapping into the SSNN terminal and give their opinion.
  • There is no unique Starborn dialogue as part of this mission.
