Starfield Wiki

Mantis is a miscellaneous mission in Starfield.

Summary[]

After any battle with Spacers, there is a chance to find the slate "Secret Outpost!" on one of the corpses. One of the first places where a player can encounter them is Nova Galactic Staryard in The Old Neighborhood storyline mission, but it can happen in any location. Only after reading the note does the Mantis mission start; without the mission, the location on the planet cannot be found.

Quick Walkthrough[]

  • I found a note about a Secret Outpost on a dead Spacer. Might be worth a read.
  • Read the Secret Outpost slate
  • A dead Spacer had a note about a Secret Outpost on Denebola I-b with a "once in a lifetime opportunity." I should investigate.
  • Go to the Secret Outpost at Denebola I-b
  • I landed on Denebola I-b and a Spacer warned me to leave the "Lair of the Mantis" before he attacked me. Mantis? Lair? There's a mystery here.
  • Expore the Lair of the Mantis
  • (Optional) learn more about the Lair of the Mantis
  • I arrived at the heart of the Lair of the Mantis. No more traps. This was meant to be for the Mantis's son, Leon. Instead it's all mine.
  • Claim the Mantis's spacesuit
  • Claim the Mantis's starship
  • I've explored the Lair of the Mantis and found the Mantis's suit and ship. I pressed a button and raised the ship to the surface, so I should go check that out.
  • Go to the Mantis's starship
  • I explored the Lair of the Mantis and have access to the Mantis's suit and ship. If I wanted I could be the next Mantis.

Detailed Walkthrough[]

Upon landing on Denebola I-b, immediately after landing, several spacers threaten you, telling you to leave immediately. After going a little further, you will meet 4 more opponents in front of the door. Inside the outpost you'll see several bodies of spacers; not far from the entrance, on one of the boxes lies the first slate "Leon Voclain - Lair Arrival", it is easy to miss it unnoticed. The rest of the messages will be on bodies or automatic on intercoms.

Moving deeper, you continue to meet both dead and still living spacers. Finally find the corpse of Leon Voclain himself in front of a puzzle room with laser turrets and pressure plates with letters. Here you also meet the cowardly spacer Livvey, who is ready to surrender to you and help you get through the traps. You can do whatever you want with him, there is little real benefit from him, he could not solve the riddle. As is Leon Voclain himself, son of Dorian Voclain, the last bearer of the mantle of the Mantis. The clue to the riddle is in a message from Leon Voclain found on one of the spacers; the last message from Dorian Voclain to her son ends with the Latin phrase "Sic semper tyrannis". Leon never realized that this was the key to the final test; seriously wounded by the turrets, he died on the threshold of the lair. The room with the turrets can be followed by a hint, but this is not necessary. To the right of the entrance there is a computer that controls the turrets, locked at the master level. Hacking requires a Security skill of at least level 3; if you come to a location at a very low level, the skill may not be enough. There are fuel tanks behind the turrets, making it easier to brute force your way through. Also, the turrets should be inactive until you step on the wrong letter, you can try to fly around.

After the puzzle room there will be some more traps and robots, after which you find yourself in a large underground cave, the lair itself. Here you will find the Mantis "Razorleaf" spaceship on a large lift, a computer with records nearby, and a passage to the living quarters, where there is a mannequin with unique set of Equipment the Mantis of legendary level on it. The specific set of armor properties is random, determined at the time the stand is opened, the basic characteristics of the set depend on the character’s level. By turning on the elevator, the ship will rise to the surface; there is an elevator from the lair that allows you to quickly get to the exit to the surface. The Razorleaf ship is waiting for you outside, all you have to do is take the pilot’s seat. For the beginning of the game, its characteristics are very good.

While aboard the Razorleaf, during encounters with spacers, they will react to an encounter with the Mantis. During a random encounter with spacers attacking a merchant ship, they will stop attacking and become neutral after one of their ships is destroyed. A merchant may greet your ship. It is also possible to meet a spacer ship that will try to rob you, but once he recognizes your ship, he will try to pay off you to let him go alive.
