Niira is the first planet in the Narion system. It has no moons.
Overview[]
Niira was once an idyllic planet with a pristine natural environment suitable for human habitation. It was originally colonized by independent settlers sometime before 2194, when the United Colonies placed The Clinic in Deepala's orbit, which precipitated Narion's settlers voting to join the Freestar Collective in protest and the Narion War erupting over control of the system in 2196. When the Narion War ended with the Treaty of Narion in 2216, Niira became a member world of the Collective.
Niira played a significant and tragic role in the Colony War that began in 2308. UC military forces backed by xenowarfare units landed on Niira with the objective of capturing the planet and using it as a forward operating base against other Freestar strategic sites. The Freestar Militia soon retaliated, but failed to evict the UC. The Battle of Niira continued for years, with Freestar repeatedly assaulting UC positions and the UC fending them off each time. With every clash, weapons of mass destruction left vast regions of the planet burned to cinders. Eventually, the Freestar Militia deployed its top mech unit, the formidable First Cavalry under the command of Major Paxton Hull, who was regarded as a tactical genius. The 1st Cav reportedly came close to recapturing Niira, but endured a 93% casualty rate. Then, in 2311, the Battle of Cheyenne resulted in a decisive Freestar victory in the Colony War and both sides negotiated a cease-fire. Hull and the remaining members of the 1st Cav ignored orders to stand down and continued fighting the entrenched UC forces until they were detained by the Freestar Militia and imprisoned. Once the Armistice brought the Colony War to an end, Niira was returned to Freestar control, but the damage was done. The Battle of Niira had transformed the planet into a dead husk, with its forests and fields turned to ash, its settlements and homesteads destroyed, and its air and water contaminated with radioactive fallout and other toxins. The devastation was determined to be irreversible, and any remaining colonists were relocated.
By 2330, one of Niira's major battlegrounds had become the site of 1-Of-A-Kind Salvage, a legal scrapping operation that salvaged derelict mechs and wrecked ships for useful parts and materials that could be resold. Scrapping on Niira was dangerous due to the toxic environment, as well as the presence of rogue UC xenoweapons and unauthorized scrappers such as Ecliptic, but these same dangers also meant Niira's "mech fields" were the most intact out of any in the Settled Systems, and therefore still lucrative after two decades. 1-Of-A-Kind's proprietor, Angelo "Gel" Alonso, named his business after the First Cavalry as a mark of respect, since their sacrifice during the Colony War gave him and other scrappers a steady job.
