Percival Walker is a retired xenowarfare science officer from the Red Devils Unit. He served in the military during the Colony War as a xenobiologist. He was laid off after the Armistice treaty was signed.

Background[]

Colony War[]

During the Colony War, the UC decided to create the Xenowarfare Division and Percival, alongside Hadrian Sanon, were assigned to the Red Devils on Mars. Percival and Hadrian had the difficult task of preparing aliens for combat, which they did up until the signing of the Armistice treaty.

At some point an attempt to train Terrormorphs for combat roles was made but due to their violent and highly untamable behavior, this resulted in a number of deaths and the closure of the program.

Post-War[]

Following the signing of the Armistice treaty, the Red Devils Unit was disbanded, their research seized by the Armistice Council, and their Headquarters closed. From there, Percival moved from odd job to odd job for the next 20 years.

Around 2330, Percival was hired by the Trade Authority to do medical and biological consulting on Mars for the Cydonia Branch. He continued to do so, eventually giving some much-needed medicine to a friend for a lower cost, his friend spread the word and Percival started selling consistent pharmaceuticals under cost. Eventually he was caught by the Trade Authority who demanded he pay the total sum of difference he had cost them while working for them, as he was in violation of his contract. This forced Percival on the run.

Prior to his disappearance, he had been working with Cambridge Cooper on a new drug, one that would increase miner efficiency and reduce their fatigue.

Helping the Vanguard[]

In 2330, the Spacefarer arrives in Cydonia at the behest of Hadrian, following the massacre on Tau Ceti II with a tissue sample for Percival. After settling his debt, the Spacefarer met with Percival to determine how a mature terrormorph ended up on a world 50–80 years ahead of schedule. Signs pointed to a repeat of the tragedy that struck Londinion and the two met with Hadrian at the Sixth Circle to discuss the next step.

Dialogue[]

Show: Delivering Devils

"So. You must be the one who got me out of the red with the Trade Authority. Can't say I don't appreciate it, but I doubt you came all this way just to do me a favor."
"Now you want to explain to me why you're going around, harassing nefarious old men by wiping away their hard-earned debts?"

Dr. Walker? I've got a tissue sample I need analyzed. Full work-up. "Tissue sample? You came all the way down here for that? Must be some damn important cells. You want to tell me what I'm about to be staring at?"
I'm here to make a delivery for an old colleague of yours - Hadrian Sanon. "Hadrian sent you? She's... did-did she look okay?"
She's alive, but was injured trying to collect this delivery I've got for you. "Sounds like Hadrian. Watched that woman lose a digit trying to get a better tissue sample. "What? You can reattach a finger, Percy." So what exactly did she have you bring me?"
If you consider getting gored by a Terrormorph and living as "okay," then yeah. "A Terrormorph? She's fortunate to be alive at all. Hope you two had plenty of back-up. So what's this she had you bring all the way down here after putting you in harm's way?"
You know how long it took me to find you? Take this damn sample. "Oh. I'm sorry my "forced into exile" lifestyle inconvenienced you... ... but if you came all this way just to deliver a sample... what exactly is it you brought me?"
Terrormorph cells from a world too young to have one. "Hadrian said that, huh... If she made you come all the way for this... let's get inside. I need to see these cells."
Tau Gourmet's own, free-range, 100% human-fed Terrormorph cells. "Terrormorph attack, huh? Not exactly sure why'd you be bringing that-- ... wait. Tau Gourmet? Like "Tau Ceti" Tau Gourmet? That's a joke, right? There's no settlement old enough on Tau Ceti to have a Terrormorph. Either someone's setting up the worst petting zoo in the universe or... Who exactly told you to bring this to me?"
Hadrian Sanon. "Hadrian? She's-- she gave you this?"
Someone who said she was an old colleague of yours. "A colleague... hunting Terrormorphs. Mother of god. Hadrian sent you, didn't she?"
"If she made you come all the way for this... let's get inside. I need to see these cells."

-
Inside the facility:
-

"Hadrian really gave you this sample? You're not lying to me? Because if you told me this was a hoax - and it'd be the best damn fake I've ever seen - I'd be mad and very, very relieved."

So Hadrian wasn't mistaken? That sample's a concern? "She was disconcertingly correct. Trying little habit of Hadrian's. Which is why if you wanted to have your film crew jump out and yell "Surprise!" I wouldn't be saddened in the least."
If something's wrong with it, talk to Hadrian. I'm just the messenger. "No, that's the problem. This looks about as genuine as they come."
The sample's not a fake. I collected it from the Terrormorph myself. "Can't just humor an old man, huh? Hmm. What I was afraid of..."
"This sample, it's got all the indicators of the worst Terrormorph attack in human history. I presume you're heard of Londinion?"
[United Colonies Native] Everyone knows about the Londinion Terrormorph attacks. There were vigils for weeks afterwards. "And for good reason."
[Xenobiologist] I believe there was a journal article describing the Terrormorph attacks there. A real loss. "That's putting it mildly."
Hadrian mentioned it. Sounds like quite the tragedy. "It was. An entire city, wiped off the map."
Doesn't ring a bell. "It was a city, wiped completely off the map by Terrormorphs."
"The swarms were so bad, they had to blow the spaceport and seal the place off from the galaxy at large. Not a lot of samples made it off the world from the time of the attack, but the ones that did... well, they looked just like this one. I didn't detect any of the telltale signatures this specimen ever sat on a ship while it was alive, either. I don't think it was transported to Tau Ceti. This specimen... it grew there. Faster than any Terrormorph should. Which means... if we're about to start a new era in human-Terrormorph relations, where big, sudden Londinion-style attacks can happen outside Londinion? That's not going to end well for humanity. So... you lugged this bad omen all the way here. You want to tell me what your plans are for it now?"
But you said the Londinion attack was massive, right? Why's one odd Terrormorph so scary? "Because until now, the Terrormorphs that wiped out Londinion had the good sense to stay put. What happened there, it was a tragedy, but at least it was contained. So to find evidence for a similar attack on a different world... well, we don't have enough information to know precisely what this means... but I doubt it's good. So I'd love to know what it is you're planning from here."
Orders are to take you and that analysis to Hadrian. She should be waiting at "The Sixth Circle." "The Circle, huh? Could use a drink about now."
Get your boots on. We're going to stop any more attacks before they start. "Music to my ears."
We're leaving. Try not to slow me down. "Not a well-mannered rescuer, now are you?"
"Here. Faster if we take the lift to the surface. Not supposed to use it... but given the circumstances, I'm inclined to just ask forgiveness. Let's get going."

"Look at all of you. Back from the underworld. Got pretty frantic on the comms towards the end there, but it sounded like this was a success? Got everything we need to put this plan in motion?"

Is the plan going to still work now that we've got to clean up Heatleeches AND Terrormorphs? "Can't be positive until we run some tests, but knowing that Terrormorphs have been masquerading as Heatleeches all this time is a big find. Arguably makes things more feasible, now that we know what we're dealing with, not less."
(Hadrian:) "Agreed. Plus I don't think you're going to have to push real hard to get folks onboard with cleaning up one of the galaxy's greatest pests if this is what they're capable of."
"But none of that's getting done without the samples. You do have them, right?"
Nearly cost a couple of fingers and toes, but yes, we got them. "Heh. Was worried about that myself, though I know I wasn't nearly as much at risk of limb loss as you all were."
(Hadrian:) "Kaiser's got them in cold storage."
"Ah. Best spot for them."
Sure did. Kaiser's got all the samples in storage. "Ah. Best place for 'em."
"Now my connection might've gotten a bit fuzzy there, but do I have it right that Vae Victis knew about this damn plant?"
(Hadrian:) "That's what it sounded like."
"Hmph. Guess the old admiral must've told someone what he learned. Even he's not clever enough to pull off an attack like that from the great beyond."
Plenty of suspects, that's for sure. "That's putting it lightly."
Actually, we can't rule him out. Vae Victis is alive and under UC custody. "I'm sorry, what?"
[Lie] You're right. Vae Victis couldn't have been involved with the attacks. "No ghost's that clever."

"Orlase? Reginald Orlase? He did this? I didn't think he was still alive. You're sure it was him?"

You knew Orlase? "Oh yeah. Both worked for UC defense research way back when. Different departments, but everyone knew Orlase. Had a mean eye for weapons tech... and a meaner temper. Wasn't exactly a surprise when he fled instead of standing trial after the Colony War. But finding out he's taken up mass murder in the years since... that is a shock. You're sure about this?"
What? You don't believe me? "Didn't say that. Just surprised to find out my former colleague's now dropping alien predators into unsuspecting cities. Just want to make sure we've got the right man. You're certain?"
Positive. The evidence is on its way to the Cabinet as we speak. "Hmm. Good place for it."

Conversations[]

Percival: "Is-is that really her? Hadrian."
Hadrian: "Percival. My god. Look at you. You're an old man now."
Percival: "Heh. No hatchling yourself anymore, Major. Our friend here showed me your sample. Suffice it to say--"
Hadrian: "Not here. Let's talk somewhere more private. Lou said we could use the back."

In the storeroom:

Hadrian: "So, were you two able to get that work-up together?"
Percival: "Got it right here. That sample... it's an exact match for the ones from Londinion."
Hadrian: "Londinion? That's-that's exactly what I was afraid of."
Percival: "Not thrilled to be the bearer of that kind of news, that's for damn sure. So tell me you've got some kind of plan for that work-up."
Hadrian: "Well, right now, we've got more questions than answers, so I've been trying to figure out what it's going to take to access our old Terrormorph data."
Percival: "Good place to start. What'd you find?"
Hadrian: "It's in the Archives."
Percival: "The Armistice Archives? Doesn't that mean we'd be dealing with the Cabinet? And the Freestar Collective? And House Va'ruun somehow? Guess we can kiss that approach good-bye."
Hadrian: "I didn't think the Cabinet would be willing to hear us out either, but, I called in some favors. They've agreed to hear us out on two conditions: One, they want to see this analysis you two have procured. And two, they want to discuss what happened on Tau Ceti... With both of us."

Show: War Relics

Major Hadrian Sanon: "I can't believe it."
Kaiser: "Major Sanon. Doctor Walker."
Percival: "You're in better shape than I expected, Kaiser. Shouldn't take us long to get you back up to full fighting capacity."
Kaiser: "This is good to hear. I was told there is a new threat on the horizon. I wish to learn more."
Major Hadrian Sanon: "Percival'll give you the full story."
Percival: "Plus get you dressed for the occasion."
Kaiser: "Occasion? Where are we going?"
Major Hadrian Sanon: "Londinion."
Kaiser: "Londinion... Doctor, I will require additional armaments."
Percival: "That's the plan. Come on."
Major Hadrian Sanon: "Captain, you're with me. Time to walk you through what we came up with."

Show: Hostile Intelligence

Major Hadrian Sanon: "Thank you, Commander. Percival, you all set to hook into their comms tower?"
Percival: "Should only take a few minutes. Let's get this done and get the hell out of here."

-
At the airlock to the city:
-

Major Hadrian Sanon: "Kaiser, Percival, everything green on your ends?"
Kaiser: "I am ready."
Percival: "Personal comms should be routed through Kaiser now. You copy that?"
Major Hadrian Sanon: "Roger. Loud and clear."
Kaiser: "Perhaps too loud."
Percival: "Oh you're a riot, robot."
Major Hadrian Sanon: "Kaiser, kick it off."
Kaiser: "Unlock code transmitted. You may open the gate when ready."

-
When entering the city:
-

Major Hadrian Sanon: "All right. On our way into the city. Percival, where are we heading?"
Percival: "Running the first sweep. Got one. Aceles. Not far. Old shipping yard just past the processing plant. Gene samples are probably in one of the containers."

-
After clearing the mind-controlled fauna:
-

Major Hadrian Sanon: "Looks like the last of 'em. No sign of the Morph, though."
Percival: "Your shipping yard's just beyond the processing plant. Cache with some goodies is towards the rear of the facility."
Major Hadrian Sanon: "Kaiser, we close enough for you to dial in the location of those samples from here?"
Kaiser: "... yes. They're faint but I'm detecting multiple valid signatures. I have restored power to the containers."
Percival: "Jackpot. Get down there and collect as many as you can."

-
After obtaining the samples:
-

Percival: "Nice work. Now, earlier scan picked up a valid Terrormorph sample, but, well, it's in the spaceport. And the quick route there looks like it got blasted when the port did."
Kaiser: "There are steam tunnels under the city which will allow us to access the spaceport."
Percival: "What're you... that-that's right. Kaiser, how did you know that?"
Kaiser: "I... am not sure."
Major Hadrian Sanon: "Percival, you see any better option?"
Percival: "Not from where I'm standing."
Major Hadrian Sanon: "Then we've got our answer."
Kaiser: "Access unlocked. We may proceed."

-
In the steam tunnels:
-

Major Hadrian Sanon: "Kaiser. This flora. This is Lazarus Plant, isn't it?"
Kaiser: "Confirmed."
Major Hadrian Sanon: "A perfect specimen for a world like this. Capable of hibernating for generations at a stretch. No one even realized it was a living thing until someone got it under a microscope and saw it had cells. Can't be cultivated anywhere but Londinion. A real marvel."

-
After defeating the terrormorph:
-

Major Hadrian Sanon: "All right. Let's get to the bottom of this. Percival, Kaiser's got the cell data from the New Atlantis and Tau Ceti attacks, right?"
Percival: "Uploaded them myself."
Major Hadrian Sanon: "Captain, let Kaiser take a look at that sample."
Kaiser: "Beginning analysis... It is a match. This suggests with high certainty that the Lazarus Plant was used to trigger the attacks on both planets."

-
At the gate to the spaceport:
-

Kaiser: "I am unable to provide sufficient power to the lock mechanism."
Major Hadrian Sanon: "Anyone got ideas where we could get some extra juice?"
Percival: "Local power looks like it was controlled in the Security Office. Upper floor."
Major Hadrian Sanon: "Captain and I can scout it out. Kaiser, see if you can't find another way to get it open."
Kaiser: "Roger that. I have restored power to the office entrance. You may proceed."

-
After restoring power:
-

Major Hadrian Sanon: "Kaiser! Try it now!"
Kaiser: "Unlock successful."
Percival: "Guys... your sample. It... moved. I'd be real careful out there if I were you."
Major Hadrian Sanon: "That... doesn't sound good. Eyes peeled."

-
After securing the final sample:
-

Major Hadrian Sanon: "All wrapped up. Time to get the hell out of here. Percival, you should unplug and find somewhere we can talk. Privately."
Percival: "On it. See you soon."
