Persuasion is a Novice Social Skill[1] that increases the Spacefarer's ability to pass speech checks during dialogue.
Persuasion is a Starting Skill for the Diplomat, Industrialist, Sculptor, and Space Scoundrel backgrounds.

Progression and Strategy[]
Persuasion can be difficult to level, as there aren't any direct ways to gain Persuasion opportunities. Due to this, it is advisable for players interested in creating a "smooth talker" character to get Persuasion early in the game.
Persuasion is a highly situational skill, but very useful within those situations. It isn't an alternative to combat, but can be used to gain access and advantages in several situations. Persuasion is rarely the only way to do something, but it is often the path of least resistance to completing quest objectives.
One mission tree early on, as a way for persuasion checks to get accumulated and accomplished is to do the Media Sponge missionline through Mitch Benjamin, found on Cydonia in the Sol system. The missions are 30 in total, providing enough for full upgrading of persuasion.
