A reactor supplies power to the ship. It determines the ship's class — A, B, or C — and thus the class of the modules that can be installed. It also determines the amount of power that can be allotted to the different components of the ship, therefore, a ship with a better reactor can make better use of more systems at once.
A ship can only have one reactor installed.
