Shinya Voss is the "Reckoner" for the Crimson Fleet, essentially their cyber runner who deals with bank accounts. As a result of his great importance to the Fleet, a remote-controlled bomb has been implanted into his chest; This to prevent him from deserting, while also giving Delgado an easy way out of Shinya's potential kidnapping. If the player jokes that Voss "must not get out much," he will state that he has not stepped foot off the Key for five years.
"If you want to pad that account of yours, the mission boards are the way to do it."
How standard are these theft missions?"Very. You'll get a location with the target goods. We don't care how you get it, as long as you deliver. You get caught? That's on you."
What can you tell me about these Piracy missions?"I'm constantly scanning for valuable shipments. You'll be given a target ship transport and the system to track them down. Just be sure you have the cargo space to get the goods."
Can I get some details on these Smuggling jobs?"We have contacts throughout the Settled Systems that require shipments of illegal goods. Smuggling requires a bit of subterfuge since we'll be loading up your ship with contraband. If you want to make that delivery without getting caught, you'll need shielded cargo space to accommodate the goods."
How do I get shielded cargo space?"Speak to Jazz about that. She'll be more than happy to set you up."
What is shielded cargo space?"You don't know? Well, you're about to enter a whole new world. Shielded cargo space is a Fleet specialty. It's made to fool the UC and Freestar Ranger scanners that are used to detect contraband."
I need shielded cargo space to not get caught doing smuggling missions. Got it."Good because I do hate repeating myself."
Will anything change with the Mission Boards now that we have the Legacy?"I don't foresee any changes, no. Yes, we'll recruit more pirates to take on the jobs. But we'll also have more intel to add to the boards. Of course, I do expect the success rate of each mission to improve dramatically. With the added funds, our ships will have enough firepower to handle their targets much more expeditiously."
"If you need credits, you know where to find me."
Show: Rook Meets King
"Time for a proper introduction. I am Shinya Voss, the official Reckoner for the Crimson Fleet. And since Naeva so thoughtfully mentioned it, yes this is a bomb embedded in my chest, and no, I'll never know the meaning of the word "humble." In fact, I find Delgado's idea of a security measure to be quite empowering."
How is a bomb in your chest empowering?"I see the bomb as a symbol of my importance, and it's a constant reminder to everyone of the sacrifice I was willing to make. The freedom I've given up, the pain? It's not something that just anyone has the resolve to bear."
Just set me up, so I can start making money."No, no. See, it doesn't work that way. You new members have no patience. No appreciation for history."
That's going to get infected."That's... amusing. I don't think I've heard that one before. Oh wait... yes I have. You might as well dispense with all the stupid jokes. I've been hearing them for years."
I'd say that was a bit extreme."Exactly the lengths we're willing to go to protect ourselves."
[Security] That's the most clever security measure I've ever seen."Glad you approve. Obviously, betrayal isn't taken lightly around here."
"Since I oversee the bulk of transactions and maintain all accounts for the Fleet, I'm a prime target for information. Should our enemies capture me or I grew any semblance of a moral conscience, you might consider me the greatest threat we have. For Delgado, the bomb grants peace of mind and a certain degree of safety."
So one wrong move, and you're dead?"Essentially. But I sleep soundly knowing I'm one of the few that can piss Delgado off and live. Should I die, all of my knowledge, the accounts, the credits... it would be a mess! He wouldn't dare. He holds the trigger, but we all know that my death cripples the Fleet. Call the bomb a weapon of last resort."
I don't think I could make a sacrifice like that."Whew. That's a relief. And here I was, worried that you've come here to eventually replace me. Get with it, rook. The only "sacrifice" you're going to be making is a portion of your credits to the Fleet."
I bet you don't get out much."It's been over five years since I've stepped off the Key. Leaving this place puts far too much at risk."
Delgado sounds like a smart man."It's why he's the boss. Of course, I'm not the first Reckoner to bear a bomb under my ribcage, but Delgado was smart enough to continue the... tradition."
"Now, let me get you set up. A moment while I convene with the Core.
"Thanks to advanced modifications even Ryujin would envy, I can interface directly with our mainframe and the GalBank network. This allows me to move and clean credits faster and more efficiently than any run-of-the-mill cyber runner. There. You're done."
"All you need now is Delgado's blessing, and you'll be one of us."
Any other modifications I need to know about?"None. Other than my chest and arm modifications, I am but a simple man. Is the interview over now? Can we get back to work?"
That was easy."Getting into the system is a piece of cake. Getting out... not so much. Anyway, I need you to listen up."
It's about time."Yes, about time you shut up and listened."
Time to make those credits."The perfect segue into my final subject."
"Thanks to our relations with contacts across the galaxy, we always have a steady stream of jobs available. I've granted you all the necessary permissions to access these listings at any time using the computers that surround the Core."
What kind of jobs?"Oh you know, smuggling, piracy, taking things that aren't yours. Nothing that should keep you up at night, well, depending on your methods."
Just tell me we're officially done here."We're officially done here."
I'm not interested in small jobs."Fine by me. There's plenty of others who do. You do less, you make less. It's a pretty simple equation."
Sounds like we'll be doing a lot of business together."If Naeva's chosen wisely, we certainly will."
"Now, I believe that covers all I have to say, so you can run along to Delgado. Take the elevator to the upper level. You should be able to find your way from there... I hope."
Quotes[]
"I see you've completed your first mission. We all have to start somewhere."
"You've completed over five missions. Very impressive."
"Ten missions in the books. Delgado will be pleased with your progress."
"You've completed twenty missions. Bear in mind, there's no extra reward, just my respect."
"You've completed fifty missions, by my count. Most impressive. Want to go for a hundred?"
"One hundred missions, in the books. At this rate, Kryx's Legacy will be pocket change compared to your accounts. Bravo."
"Good luck with the mission."
"How's the mission coming along?"
"You've handled every type of mission, and done so with aplomb. I'd say this job comes natural to you."
"Those mission boards aren't going to clear themselves."
"Piracy missions are always a healthy source of income."
"Some missions require stealing from settlements. Be sure to gear up at the Depot if you need to."
"Be sure you have the proper shielding for any smuggling jobs."
"Ready to make those credits?"
"Tick-tock. A little less loitering, a little more looting."
"Those mission boards aren't going to clear themselves."
"What are you standing around for? There's work to be done."
"There's always work to be done. But given your mission count, I doubt I need to remind you."
