Starship Design is an Expert Tech Skill. It is used to customize Ships. The player has broad options for Ship Customization in Starfield.

Progression and Strategy[]
Starship Design isn't hard to level, but it may be a bit credit-hungry to level. Ship customization is frequently one of the major credit sinks in the late game. A great ship is a huge asset, but the player will pay for it.
That said, Starship design is (arguably) a must-have for the late game. While the player could simply buy larger and more powerful ships, the up-front cost is exorbitant. It is generally easier to develop a ship the player has over time rather than to buy a new and unfamiliar ship. Frankly, there aren't that many purchase options for new ships, and customization is required to squeeze the most out of the ships the player has. The best parts in the game are often gated behind Starship Design. Starship design allows the player to create powerful ships, either specialized or general purpose.
