A Temple is a type of structure found on various planets that emits an anomalous signature similar to those of Artifacts. They can be entered to obtain or upgrade a Power.[1]

Overview[]

Temples were built by The Creators at an unknown time in the distant past. They contain a single large chamber with a set of rings that can be activated to grant individuals Powers, or upgrade a specific Power if it has already been obtained from another Temple with the same name. For example, visiting a Temple named "Temple Alpha" for the first time will grant the Personal Atmosphere Power, and visiting a second "Temple Alpha" after that will enhance Personal Atmosphere into Personal Atmosphere II, and so on.

The player first encounters a Temple during the Constellation questline. After that, the player will be notified and given a quest upon entering a system with a Temple. Alternatively, Vladimir Sall will point the player to a Temple location if spoken to. Once landed near a Gravitational Anomaly, the player can follow scanner distortions to locate the Temple. Since Temple placement is random after the first, there is generally no way to head directly to a specific Temple.

Each Temple has an entryway that looks like a hallway. If entry is blocked by pillars, the pillars should recede if the player approaches them and waits a few moments. The player can then enter and solve the Temple puzzle to gain its Power. The puzzle involves passing through clusters of lights that appear throughout the chamber as quickly as possible. If the player is too slow and a cluster disappears before they pass through it, the puzzle will reset. As you pass through each cluster of lights, you hear a noise, and the helix thing on the floor of the chamber will turn faster and faster. At some point, after passing through a number of light clusters (a dozen, more or less), the helix will stop turning, and will become a single vertical metal ring. Enter that ring and you have solved the puzzle.

Notes[]

It is necessary to acquire an artifact before you can get a quest that leads to that artifact's temple. If you run out of quests for artifacts or temples, talk to Vladimir Sall, who starts out in the Eye space station, then later moves to the Lodge. If Vladimir Sall refuses to speak to you--this is a bug; he should say, "I don't have any more locations right now"--it may mean that all the remaining artifacts are in somebody else's possession, or that some other quest must be completed first. Avoiding spoilers, you will have to continue the play through before you can get more temple locations from Vladimir Sall.

Before heading off to find a temple, heal up and stock up on ammo and meds. Planets can have dangerous animals, and hazardous conditions. Expect to be attacked after obtaining the power of the temple.

With a quest to find a temple active, e.g., Power from Beyond, travel to the star system and planet the temple is on, and land at the planetary target marked Scanner Anomaly.

Usually, the game shows your ship landing on a planet, and you can see the surrounding area. Sometimes, though, the game shows a playing tip instead. If the game shows you landing, watch carefully. You can sometimes see the temple as you land and determine its direction relative to the orientation of the ship.

The temple will be near where the ship lands. Don’t bother searching for it far away.

Open your hand scanner ('F' on PC). Targets first appear on the hand scanner as unknown. Tap the 'E' key (on PC), and the target will resolve into a more specific category. All the Gravitational Anomalies that register on the hand scanner are irrelevant. All Natural targets are irrelevant. If the scanner registers a Structure target close to the ship, it is probably irrelevant. Usually, the temple is too far from the ship to register on the scanner, however as you approach the temple it will appear as unknown, then resolve to be a Structure target.

Having seen the direction of the temple (or not) as your ship landed, verify the direction by holding up the hand scanner. You may need to turn around in a circle to find it, or possibly run around the ship in a circle. When you are aimed at the temple with the hand scanner on, the white circle the hand scanner displays will “glitch” significantly, i.e., the circle will not be crisp and clear all around its perimeter. Imperfections will momentarily appear then disappear, like a glitching signal on an oscilloscope.

When you see glitching, continue circling to see if the glitching occurs in an arc rather than a single direction. If so, the temple is probably very close, and you want to choose an initial direction in the middle of the arc, where presumably the glitching is strongest. Sometimes there will be very minor glitching in a false direction. Ignore that. Major glitching is always the direction of the temple.

When you find the direction that glitches, you may be able to actually see the temple from the vicinity of the ship, if the weather is clear and the temple is close enough. Otherwise, open the local map (press ‘G’ on PC when the hand scanner is active) and place the user’s way point by clicking on the local map in the near distance in the direction you are facing (a conical flashlight beam shows your direction on the local map). Head in this direction and you will find the temple.

As you approach the temple the hand scanner glitching increases, and you will begin to hear the sound of static louder and louder. This means you're on the right track. You will see a hand scanner target marked unknown in the distance, which will resolve to a Structure. Next, a blue hexagonal quest target marker will appear, marking a door into the temple. Eventually you will see the temple. When you are very close the game tells you that you have discovered Temple Greek Letter.

If the temple seems to be in the middle of a steep mountain, it isn't. Start circling the mountain and look for a pass that allows easy access. on a high gravity planet, you may need to climb up a rocky stair-like path. Temples are placed on planets by designers. They do not spawn in randomly. There is always access.

At the temple, walk around and look for a triangle shaped wall sloping down from the roof of the temple's central chamber (not the spire) to the ground. Think of these triangular features as the letter "X" seen from top down, with one diagonal being a pair that contains 2 doors into the interior chamber. If necessary, if it's too hard to find a door, climb up on a triangle to the roof of the interior chamber, and circle around the top until you find a pair. Drop down inside the pair, turn around, and you will be facing a door.
