The following is a timeline of events in the Starfield universe. Most major events on earth prior to 2050 are similar to those seen in the real world.
21st century[]
2050[]
2100[]
- By this time, humans are living in space.
22nd century[]
2112[]
- Cydonia, humanity's first extra-terrestrial colony, is founded on Mars by Deimos Staryards Inc.[2]
2122[]
- Titan Astrobase is established on Titan by NASA in an effort to discover microbial alien life on the moon.[3]
2132[]
- After Titan Astrobase fails to find any life on Titan, NASA defunds its xenobiology program.[4]
2135[]
- Titan Astrobase is repurposed for scientists and engineers to research how colonies can be built on inhospitable worlds.[4]
Pre-2138[]
- Dr. Victor Aiza, a NASA astronaut and theoretical physicist, leads a retrieval team that discovers an Artifact at the heart of a gravitational anomaly on Mars. Upon touching it, Aiza receives a warning from himself from an alternate universe that using the Artifact to make the first Grav Drive will lead to the downfall of Earth. Aiza ignores this warning, and begins analyzing the Artifact and developing the Grav Drive with the help of metallurgical engineer Dr. Judith Tatienne.
2138[]
- April 14: Dr. Victor Aiza's NASA research team conducts the first ever test of a small-scale, prototype Grav Drive at the NASA Launch Tower at Cape Canaveral on Earth. Further tests of an up-scaled prototype are planned to take place on Luna due to its abundance of Helium-3, which Grav Drives require for fuel.
2140[]
- September 27: The generation ship ECS Constant departs Earth and begins its 200-year trip to a habitable planet in a distant star system. The generation ship, the largest and most advanced spacecraft of its time, was the brainchild of Rupert Brackenridge, who had concluded through independent research into a variety of plausible doomsday scenarios that humanity was certain to face an extinction-level event of some kind within 50 years and Earth was destined to become uninhabitable.
2141[]
- December 8: NASA, in partnership with civilian spacecraft manufacturer Nova Galactic, carries out the first public demonstration of a grav jump using a full-size prototype Grav Drive on Luna. The test's success paves the way for mass-production of the Grav Drive.
2149[]
- February 12: Dr. Victor Aiza and Dr. Judith Tatienne recruit Lan Hsu for Project Demeter, an initiative to create more accurate scanning satellites to track emerging changes in Earth's meteorological patterns.
- August 21: Using data collected by Project Demeter, NASA's Astrophysics Research Team (ART) confirms fluctuations in Earth's magnetosphere that correspond with gravity wave spikes emanating from Luna. ART Chief Scientist Dr. Luke Andrews warns that the fluctuations are increasing in severity exponentially, and could expose Earth to solar radiation as well as cause the sputtering, or stripping away, of the planet's atmosphere.
- August 22: Dr. Victor Aiza, Dr. Judith Tatienne, and Lan Hsu realize that Grav Drive usage is destroying Earth's magnetosphere. The Grav Drive's flaw and its role in Earth's demise are covered up to prevent a backlash against the technology, and Hsu designs a fix for the flaw disguised as an emergency update for Grav Drive fueling pumps.
- People with advance knowledge of Earth's deteriorating magnetosphere begin leaving the planet.
2150[]
- Scientists announce that Earth's magnetosphere is weakening and will collapse in about 50 years, threatening all life on the planet with extinction. Planning begins for the evacuation of Earth.
2156[]
- Humans first arrive in Alpha Centauri as part of an exploratory mission to identify habitable worlds where humans can relocate.
- New Atlantis is founded on Jemison in Alpha Centauri.[5]

This ship's descendants go on to become House Va'ruun, a theocracy founded by Jinan Va'ruun.[6]

- Earth loses its magnetosphere, causing its atmosphere to dissipate into space. Humanity's homeworld is rendered uninhabitable.
2216[]
- After years of unsuccessfully hunting the Freestar Collective's fleet, the United Colonies finally corners and destroys it, effectively winning the Narion War. However, by this time public support for the war has reached an all-time low and the UC government is pressured to bring the war to a humane conclusion. As a result, the Treaty of Narion grants generous concessions to the Freestar Collective. The treaty also marks the first formal use of the term "Settled Systems".

2257[]
- The colony ship Clark Lewis is reported lost. At some point in its journey, the vessel's Helium-3 tanks ruptured and blew the reactor into space, permanently stranding it. With no hope of rescue, the colonists resort to violence and cannibalism before starving to death over the next several years.[10]

2282[]
- Constellation member Chloe Bao discovers and boards the Clark Lewis colony ship. Her report on the gruesome fate of the colonists is withheld from the public by Sebastian Banks over fears that it would discourage space exploration.[10]
2283[]
- Constellation founder Sebastian Banks disappears while on an expedition. The remaining members are unable to agree on who should succeed him as chair. The group is saved from dissolution at the last minute when Chloe Bao changes her vote, and she is then approved as the next chair.[11]
