Progression and Strategy[]
Weapon Engineering isn't hard to complete the challenges for. It can be powerleveled very quickly if the player is willing to buy crafting materials and make a bunch of low-grade mods. The research will gobble up even more crafting materials, but it's a relatively low cost for the options gained. A good place to craft is the basement of The Lodge.
Weapon Engineering is a must-have for the late game. Weapon mods are potentially very powerful, and almost all weapons in Starfield can mount several of them. Weapon mods can help the player avoid "helpless kitten syndrome" where they can do virtually no damage to enemies. As weapon mods serve various purposes, it's hard to go wrong with it for playstyle reasons.
